Houston Mother Murdered & Her 1-Year-Old Shot By Man Free On 7-Felony Bonds

More heartbreaking stories from what Crime Stopper’s Andy Kahan calls the 'Harris County Bond Pandemic'.

A one-year-old boy is shot on his birthday while his mother is murdered while holding him.

Investigator say the suspect is the baby boy’s father and he was free on SEVEN felony bonds.

Andy Kahan has the break down on the suspect’s rap sheet:

Police say the mother, Layla Steele was holding her son at the time of the shooting.

KPRC-TV reports,

“Witnesses told authorities they heard an argument happening in the parking lot prior to the incident. Authorities believe the woman was a victim of domestic violence.
Investigators said they believe the suspect is the father of the child. He is out on seven felony bonds and is wearing an ankle monitor, police said. The man fled the scene on foot. Police are currently working to locate him.”

The son, Zeus, was hit in the ankle and is expected to survive.

Layla Steele’s sister & mother want to know why the suspect was free on bond for 7 felonies.

Sister Jazz says, “there’s no way that that should’ve slipped, where seven felony bonds, a person was out, and I feel like, my sister’s blood is on their hands...He was on an ankle monitor and told to stay away from her, but was that ankle monitor being monitored?”

As Andy Kahan writes, “might be going out on a limb here but me thinks this multiple felony bond thing just ain’t working out, especially for public safety which should be priority number one from our elected leaders."
