The Democrat controlled Senate rejected Bernie Sander proposal to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour.
Seven Democrats along with one Independent who caucuses with Democrats voted with Republicans to defeat the hike.
The Democrats voting with Republicans include:
- Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.)
- Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.)
- Jon Tester (D-Mont.)
- Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.)
- Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.)
- Chris Coons (D-Del.)
- Tom Carper (D-Del.)
- Angus King (I-Maine.)
As The Hill notes, “Coons’s vote was especially surprising as he is one of President Biden’s closest allies in the Senate, but he and Carper also represent a business-friendly state.”
No real surprise that Manchin, Sinema & Tester voted with Republicans. They’re all somewhat moderate and represent more conservative states.
Here’s Sinema voting against the hike which has liberals upset and threatening to primary her.
The Bernie Sanders wage hike was in an amendment tucked into the “COVID Relief” Package
After the debate, Bernie was outraged vowing “one way or the other we are going to pass a $15 an hour minimum wage”
The White House is also vowing to fight alongside Bernie for the $15 an hour minimum wage.
The Congressional Budget Office says a $15 an hour minimum wage would lead to 1.4 million jobs being cut and add $54 billion to the deficit.
