If some new numbers are correct, then our happiness is keeping pace with the economy. Actually, the economy is doing better.

The Harris Poll Happiness Index says we're just not a happy bunch of people right now. And it's across the board. College graduates. Different ethnic groups. Diversity expert Royalyn Reid says she's not surprised.

“We have to look at where we are as a country right now. Everybody is charged with doing more with less. There are less jobs. There are less opportunities,” Reid said.

Elaine Wellman is 'The Happiness Coach,' and she told KTRH she thinks the research is somewhat faulty here.

“It was done during the week of April 10th to April 15th. That’s tax week. Maybe it wasn’t the best week to do it,” Wellman joked.

April 15th was also the day of the Boston Bombings, and Reid says that has something to do with the results the researchers got.

“Things can flip. It would be interesting to see what would happen if the research was done at several points during the year,” Reid explained.

Women are happier than men according to the index, by a 35% to 32% count. Wellman says it’s just in their nature.

“Women share more. They reveal more of themselves. That might be one way to attribute it,” Wellman explained.

Democrats and Republicans are equally happy at 35%.
