Judge James Boasberg announced today that he has found "probable cause" to hold the Trump administration in contempt after it failed to follow an order requiring two planes full of undocumented immigrants en route to El Salvador to be returned to the United States.
In his 48-page opinion, Boasberg stated that by failing to return the undocumented immigrants to the U.S., the administration demonstrated a "willful disregard" for the court, sufficient for the government to be found in criminal contempt.
The administration now has until April 23 to respond to questions about the incident. If it does not, Boasberg says he will refer the matter to the Justice Department for criminal prosecution.
The administration argues that the planes were outside his jurisdiction at the time of the order because they were already over international waters.
