Suspect Identified in Hit-and-Run of West Houston Bicyclist

A woman has been taken into custody in connection with an early Sunday morning hit-and-run on Houston's west side.

Ashley Nelson was riding her bicycle along Empanada drive, near Highway 6 at Beechnut about 4:30 am, when she was hit by a car.

Someone called police to help her but she was pronounced dead a short time later.

The driver of the car sped off, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzales.

Later in the day the hit-and-run driver was identified as 28-year-old Shantia Monique Howard.

She was then arrested and charged with failure to stop and render aid.

Howard is in a Harris County jail, no bond had been set as of Sunday evening.
