Can Donald Trump End Birthright Citizenship?

As president-elect Donald Trump prepares to re-secure the border when he returns to the White House next month, he is also gearing up for a legal fight over 'birthright citizenship'.

The big question is, can Trump actually end it?

"The president on his own can't actually get rid of it, in other words he can't just sign an executive order and say, ok now there's no more birthright citizenship" said Mark Krikorian, executive director for the Center for Immigration Studies.

But, what Trump and his administration can do, is set the stage for the real showdown.

"So, what the president can do is through an executive order, tell the state department not to issue passports to newborns unless the parents can show that at least one of them is a U.S. citizen or a green card holder" Krikorian told KTRH, "And the Social Security Administration not to give social security numbers to newborns."

That's the way to get it started, until the case is heard in a U.S. Supreme Court showdown.

"They'll be a lawsuit, obviously" noted Krikorian, "And then it will go to the Supreme Court and we'll see what happens. But at least we'll get the issue before the Supreme Court, and get a decision."

He adds that this is all due to a misinterpretation of the 14th Amendment.
