Many Homeless After Houston-Area Apartment Fire

Firefighters worked quickly and efficiently to bring an apartment complex fire under control early Sunday morning, but they were unable to save two dozen apartment units, which suffered extensive damage in the blaze.

Residents of the complex and officials in north Harris County were relieved to know no one was hurt and no one was killed in the fire, which spread quickly, according to witnesses at the Ashford Santa Cruz apartments on Kuykendahl near FM 1960.

It took more than 50 firefighters to bring the blaze under control, according to the Klein Fire Department, and between 80 and 100 people were estimated to have lost their places of residence among the charred remains of the complex.

The American Red Cross of Houston arrived at the apartments later in the day and began making arrangements to help some fire victims find temporary shelter.
