What Will Trump's Second Term Mean For The Border Crisis?

Trump was able to make major progress toward securing the border during his first term, so what can we expect to see on the border from Trump 2.0? For starters, Trump doesn't need to come up with new policies, so we can expect faster results.

Joey Chester with the Federation for American Immigration Reform told KTRH, "Trump can just do what worked the first time." He said, "You have the executive action policies that were already in place under the Trump administration. Construction of the border wall, for example, is something that has already been approved."

Chester pointed out that the project is already completely funded, and much of the material is already in place at the southern border. All that needs to be done is for the project to be unfrozen, so that construction can resume.

Chester also said that thanks to Trump's strong rhetoric on illegal immigration during the campaign, the surge of illegal immigration expected between now and Trump's inauguration might not materialize as previously thought. He said, "Him saying he's going to secure the border may deter people because they understand this could be a very long journey to get to the border, and they might not make it in time."

The real battle will be getting Trump's secure border agenda implemented by Congress, so that it can become permanent. Chester said, "We need Congress to pass things like the Secure Border Act, to codify secure borders into law."

He warned that if that doesn't happen, we could once again see an open-border president come back into office, and undo all of Trump's executive orders, just like Joe Biden did in 2021.
