Whitmire: Houston To Roll Out 'City-Sponsored Encampment' For Homeless

The City of Houston plans to open its own 'city-sponsored encampment' for homeless individuals.

During a city council meeting Wednesday, Mayor John Whitmire said the homelessness issue in the city continues to be a problem. He's expressed his concerns with it ever since being elected.

"The homeless in public space is just not going to be acceptable," he said.

The city has been able to reduce the number of people living in shelters or on the streets over the past few years, but there are still believed to be around 12,000 people dealing with homelessness. Recently, people from many different neighborhoods have raised their concerns to council members about the homeless population in their area too.

The mayor's office is expected to roll out more details about the encampment soon.
