Criminals Allowed Remain Free Even After Violating Restrictions

Crime rates continue to rise, and almost daily, a new story breaks about a suspect out on bond committing another crime while awaiting trial. Some suspects are even allowed to stay on the streets after violating their bond restrictions.

Andy Kahan with Crime Stoppers told KTRH, "One of the defendants tested positive for drugs—amphetamines, methamphetamines, cocaine, and several others. Yet nothing happened."

On top of that, felons on parole for violent crimes are being given PR bonds, which are essentially get-out-of-jail-free cards. He said, "If you're on parole for a violent offense, you shouldn't be getting a personal recognizance get-out-of-jail-free card. That's going to change next session."

Kahan says Crime Stoppers is currently looking at multiple pieces of legislation that would help solve this problem, as well as other issues with our current bond system.
