Texas gun leaders like Louisiana's tax exempt weekend on firearms, ammo

Firearms, ammo and even some hunting supplies are exempt from state and local sales tax this weekend in Louisiana.

The Louisiana Department of Revenue says the state's Second Amendment Weekend Sales Tax Holiday runs Friday, Sept. 6 through Sunday, Sept. 8.

The sales tax exemption applies to purchased firearms, ammunition, some archery items, hunting apparel and select knives. The exemption only applies to individual consumer purchases and not business or commercial purchases.

There's no such holiday in the state of Texas but it's possible it could come to the Lone Star state eventually. Chris McNutt, President of Texas Gun Rights, a state affiliate of the National Association for Gun Rights, said they would want it to even last longer than just one weekend.

"Texas Gun Rights is looking at this next legislative session to make it a year-round law to exempt all firearm sales and accessories and ammunition sales from the state sales tax," he said.

McNutt said there aren't currently any sponsors for such legislation but conversations are expected to pick up on it over the next few months. He's hoping Texas will become a state that others in the country look to when it comes to firearm use and the Second Amendment.

"We could for once start leading the nation instead of playing follow the leader on gun issues," said McNutt.

When asked if the state should consider a similar piece of legislation, Vice President of Open Carry Texas David Amad said he'd be all for it although it may be difficult for lawmakers to be on board.

"The last thing they want to do is give up money so I wouldn't look for them to do it," he said. "But who wouldn't like to save that."

"I think this is a great idea and I would love to see them do it," Amad added.
