Passenger rail is still much talked about for Texas

Having a passenger rail system run through Texas has been talked about for many years.

The state has fiddled with the idea of implementing a rail system that stretches from southern Texas and the Houston area all the way up to North Texas and Dallas.

The state’s population is projected to grow to about 47 million from 30 million people by 2050. With more people moving to the state in recent years, residents are also looking for another possible mode of transportation.

Political Consultant Bill Miller doesn't the rail system happening anytime soon.

"The concept has been around for quite a long time and efforts have been made but I don't think any have have had real serious success moving the needle," said Miller.

For 10 years, there's been a battle for a high-speed rail project between Dallas and Houston. Texas Central had said the rail system could connect people from the two major cities in about 90 minutes as opposed to the usual 3.5 hour car trip. The project has lost traction over fights to secure the land needed.

Miller said the major problem is private property owners not wanting to give up their land for such a project.

"To build rail through Texas you've got to take the right away and property owners don't want to give it up," he said.

The cost for the statewide project is anybody's guess. Miller said right now it's a great concept and would perhaps solve a major transportation issue, but the execution is not there yet.

"I don't see the willingness or the political will to see this reach a finish," Miller said.
