State Appeals Uplift Harris Decision

As expected. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has appealed a district judge’s decision to allow the Harris County basic income program to move forward next week.

Paxton had argued that the selection criteria for Uplift Harris was not “rational” under the Texas Constitution’s equal protection clause because the County used a lottery system to determine which qualified applicants to select. Harris County responded that each applicant had to meet income and geographic restrictions, all of which just so happened to be in Democrat districts.

The program would give select families $500 a month if it is eventually allowed to proceed.
