Democrats Have Created a Squatting Epidemic

Wild left Democrats have been pushing for normalization and decriminalization of theft for years, and the predictable result has been rising theft of homes through squatting. In some states, squatters can wind up costing landlords thousands in lost revenue, plus they are able to rack up charges for utilities that homeowners legally can't turn off.

In New York, one woman was arrested for changing the locks on her own home in an attempt to force squatters out. She now has to fight in the courts to get the squatters out of her home.

Sam Houston State University Criminal Justice Professor and former HPD Captain Greg Fremin spoke with KTRH on the issue of squatters. He says, "They're taking advantage of the system. And it's the undoing of our society in some of these cities. They look like third-world countries now because of this."

Fremin says the good news here is that these radical squatters' rights laws haven't made it to Texas yet. He said, "I can tell you from my years on the police department, if we got a call that someone was in someone else's house, and we could tell that this person was the owner, and the other person had no right to be there, he's going to jail immediately for trespassing."

Fremin says the best way to protect yourself from squatters is to always stay up to date on all your local city and county regulations, but remember that state law, including the castle doctrine, always trumps local laws.
