Texas Panhandle has Red Flag Warnings

The very rare path of totality for Monday's solar eclipse will send many Houston area residents northward for a better look of the celestial event, and there is a danger lurking. Texas is the state with the most miles of the best views in the US.

The National Weather Service has issued Red Flag Fire warnings for the Texas Panhandle and a large part of West Texas.

The entire panhandle has been under a Red Flag warning all day Friday, but this new warning is for Saturday. In addition to the Panhandle, the warning area runs from just north of Wichita Falls to Abilene and then south to Uvalde. The warning area includes the Midland-Odessa area, the Big Bend area and El Paso.

Strong southerly winds, warm temperatures and low humidity readings will make conditions favorable for the rapid spread of any fires. Any outdoor activity that could produce flames or sparks is discouraged.
