Joe Biden has overseen a record-breaking closure of 11 different United States Embassies from Afghanistan to Haiti during his time as president. The embassies closed under President Biden include Burma, Chad, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Nigeria, Sudan, Niger, and most recently, Haiti.

Retired United States diplomat Stephan Helgesen told KTRH that closing these embassies will end up having consequences. He said, "It has geopolitical implications for all of us. Not only the United States but also the countries in question."

Helgesen said that embassies play a critical role in the pursuit of America's international interests. They're used as information hubs, as well as playing a key role in negotiations with foreign powers.

He also says that U.S. embassies are critical to American citizens, like those who were recently stranded in both Afghanistan and Haiti. As we saw in those countries, when an embassy closes with Americans still inside the foreign country, return to the United States can border on impossible.
