A day after Mayor John Whitmire announced that an independent review of the handling of 264,000 sexual assault cases that were dismissed due to 'lack of personnel', along with a review of HPD Chief Troy Finner, the Chief faced the media again.
"What has happened since 2016 is unacceptable" Finner said, "And HPD as a department owns it."
Since the bombshell report a couple of weeks ago, 3,010 sexual assault cases have been reviewed, and 32 additional investigators have been assigned to contact victims and review reports. The cases are still HPD's top priority.
"We don't have all the answers today" Finner noted, "We're committed to doing whatever it takes to fix this issue of suspending incident reports, and making sure that it never happens again."
The Chief also admitted that the 'lack of personnel' code should have never been used, and that it will never be used again. And as for his role, and possibly future?
"As the Mayor announced yesterday, there will be an independent 3rd party review" Finner told the media, "I welcome such review, I think it lends credibility and it answers to a lot of critics that we have somebody else looking at it."
Chief Finner said the review is going to take time, and he will update the media accordingly.
