House Speaker Mike Johnson's efforts to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for his handling of the border crisis have failed. The House held a floor vote on Tuesday afternoon, and the resolution to impeach Mayorkas fell short and ended in a 215 to 215 tie.
Three Republicans joined the 212 Democrats who voted against impeachment. They were Wisconsin's Mike Gallagher, California's Tom McClintock, and Colorado's Ken Buck.
There was some drama, as the initial vote tally was 216 to 214, but one GOP member changed his vote from no to yes, meaning the resolution can be brought forward for a vote again in a few days.
If the vote had passed, Mayorkas would have been the first cabinet secretary impeached in almost 150 years.
