Winter means icy roads in Texas - as we were reminded last week in the Houston area.

According to Bambi Hall, Public Information Officer for Houston Region of TX DOT. How they treat our roads, bridges and overpasses have evolved with time. Pre-treatment and de-icing are both done by TX DOT.

TX DOT uses a Tier system to deploy the resources to confront icy roads. Tier 1 roadways are major evacuation routes in the Houston - the Interstates would be examples of these. The Hardy Toll Road is a Tier 2 roadway, according to TX DOT.

TX DoT uses a brine solution - and 385 thousand gallons were on hand. They also use CHATROCK - which is a mixture of rock and "MELTDOWN" a more textured salt solution.
