Will Governor Abbott Call A 5th Special Session In 2024?

Last year was a busy year for the Texas legislature with 4 special sessions. But one of Governor Greg Abbott's top priorities, school choice, did not pass. So what can we expect in 2024?

Will there be a 5th special session to start off the new year?

"So far there has not been a 5th special session declared, and it's looking like there will not be" said Brad Johnson, senior reporter with the Texan, "Governor Abbott's sites are firmly on the primaries, and trying to flip seats in the Republican primary to candidates who promised to vote for school choice."

That means replacing the 21 house Republicans that voted against, along with the 5 lawmakers that are retiring.

"The math right now is the math" Johnson told KTRH, "There is no changing that no matter how much coaxing the governor does. Right now, with the governor digging his heels in where he is, and with the 21 house members digging their heels in where they are, there's no moving the needle until seats change hands."

In addition to school choice, other items of note still remaining on Governor Abbott's agenda include teacher pay raises, and a school security bill.

The Texas primary is right around the corner, coming up on March 5th.
