Christmas Tree Prices may be headed higher - but not across the board

Christmas Tree prices are higher this year - but Texas grown trees may not have gone up as much as out-of-state trees due to transportation cost differences.

Fred Raley, Texas A&M Forest Service Tree Improvement Coordinator says that many Texas Christmas Tree growers are holding their prices steady this year, while out-of-state tree prices are going up - due, in part, to higher transportation prices. Raley said that the Texas industry has grown substantially and now represents $397 Million in economic impact and employs almost 4,000 people.

Stan Reed, Executive Secretary of the Texas Christmas Tree Growers Association says that the numbers of Texas grown trees have gone up dramatically as Texas producers have planted more than a quarter million seedlings this year. Reed says that real Christmas trees can be recycled and used as landscape mulch in gardens and flower beds and as habitats and to help prevent erosion on Texas beaches.
