There are increasing numbers of elderly couples who are getting divorced. Unhappy or unfulfilling marriages are leaving some ready for a fresh start.
They may also be setting themselves up for a life of loneliness in old age they hadn’t considered.
Boomers may want to give thought to the growing development of co-housing.
There is a community coming together in Houston called Co-Housing Houston that is still accepting members.
“If you’re a boomer you might think it is restoring the way we all grew up in the 50’s and 60’s, with knowing your neighbors, in and out of each other’s homes, ready support at your fingertips,” Says Lynn Morestead, one of the members.
Think of it as a condo with private units for every family. Bedrooms, kitchen, living room, laundry. But the secret sauce of co-housing is the common area. “You might have a place where most people eat together, there would be a kitchen where you can cook meals together, most of them also feature some sort of laundry solution for those who want to.” There are also spare bedrooms, in case any of the members of the community have guests or grandchildren visiting.
This is an idea whose time has come. CoHousing Houston has a meeting coming up at the end of the month if this twinkles your toes and you want to know more.
