The Demise of Tech Jobs Not Felt in Texas

There have been almost 170,000 layoffs in the tech industry so far this year, and it's only May. That more than all of last year.

In spite of the headline grabbing stories of industry layoffs, Patrick Jankowski with the Greater Houston Partnership says we are not seeing it here.

"If you look at the West Coast they've had over 200 layoff announcements, in New York they've had well over 100 announcements," Jankowski tells KTRH News. But we're not seeing it here. January saw more than 84,000, February and March both in the mid 30,000 range, and less than 18,000 in April, so the trends are looking positive. But Texas is looking even better.

"If you're in Dallas it may look more like finance; if you're in Austin it may look like an app; but if you're in Houston the tech is going to look like something that supports healthcare or oil and gas. We're getting the jobs, but we're not getting the announcements that make the headlines. We've got more quiet work going on behind the scenes.

Patrick Jankowski with Greater Houston Partnership says Texas has built up so much economic momentum that a potential national recession might miss us altogether.
