Houston to bid on hosting 2024 Democratic National Convention

City leaders plan to submit a bid this week to host the next Democratic National Convention.

A City Council vote to okay city services for the August 2024 event is scheduled for Wednesday. The city would commit to providing fire, police, and traffic control services plus venues such as the George R. Brown Convention Center and NRG Stadium.

The deadline to submit a bid is Friday. The Democratic National Committee will begin visiting proposed sites this summer and choose the host city late this year or in early 2023.

It's estimated the convention could bring more than 50,000 visitors to the city and have a total economic impact of some $230 million.

Mayor Sylvester Turner says the city also plans to bid for the Republican National Convention in 2028.

Houston last hosted a national political convention in 1992 when the RNC was held at the Astrodome. Houston lost to Milwaukee in a bid for the 2020 DNC.
