One dead, widespread damage across New Orleans after tornado

At least one person was killed as a tornado touched down in the New Orleans area Tuesday night, damaging homes, knocking out power and prompting searches for possibly trapped residents.

The twister hit near St. Bernard Parish on the east side of the city. A 26-year-old man was reported dead after first responders found him outside his home in Arabi, between Chalmette and the Lower Ninth Ward.

Other residents were reported hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening. St. Bernard Parish President Guy McGinnis said several homes were destroyed by the storm.
