Dozens of law enforcement officers looked on in a Harris County courtroom Monday as Eddie Alberto Miller, 19, appeared for a bond hearing in the killing of Harris County Precinct 4 Deputy Constable Kareem Atkins.
Judge Hilary Unger granted a request from the Harris County District Attorney’s Office that Miller be held in jail indefinitely without bond. Bail can legally be denied when a defendant is charged with capital murder.
Miller's attorney argued that prosecutors had not shown he was the gunman in the Oct. 16 fatal shooting that also wounded Deputies Darrell Garrett and Juqaim Barthen. Garrett was paralyzed and is reportedly still hospitalized.
Atkins, 30, had just returned to work from paternity leave. He leaves a wife and 6-month-old baby.
Police say Miller used an AR-15 rifle to open fire on the three officers as they tried to break up a fight in their off-duty security jobs at 45 Norte Sports Bar in the 4400 block of the North Freeway.
