UT professor blasts faculty resolution that backs teaching of CRT

Dr. Richard Lowery, associate professor of finance at the University of Texas at Austin, voiced his opposition this week to a school resolution that would "defend academic freedom" by allowing the teaching of critical race theory in classrooms.

The faculty resolution responds to legislation seen around the country that is intended to crack down on controversial critical race theory curriculum in grades K-12 and at the university level.

"State legislative proposals seeking to limit teaching and discussions of racism and related issues have been proposed and enacted in several states, including Texas," the resolution states. "This resolution affirms the fundamental rights of faculty to academic freedom in its broadest sense, inclusive of research and teaching of race and gender theory."

Lowery contends that critical race theory has "no scientific basis."
