Nicholas approaches Texas coast; could be hurricane before landfall

Tropical Storm Nicholas is already impacting Houston and may even gain strength before making landfall tonight on the Texas coast, probably near Matagorda Bay.

The storm is expected to be a big rainmaker for Texas. Most areas will see 8 to 16 inches of rain. But there are some spots that could see more than 20 inches. Jeff Lindner with the Harris County Flood Control District told Houston's Morning News about the areas he is worried about.

"The main threat tonight into tomorrow will be the heavy rain and flooding, especially from I-10 South down to the coast. We are watching that area very closely," Lindner said, adding that the storm will be a 24 hour event for Houston.

Fort Bend County has been in preparation mode since yesterday. Judge KP George says he's concerned over the rainfall possibilities.

"We have a very flat terrain. That is absolutely a concern for our office of emergency management," George stated.

Closer to the coast, Galveston County Judge Mark Henry told KTRH forecasters are having difficulty getting a grasp on Nicholas because it reformed its center overnight. And while Nicholas will bring heavy rain to the coast, Henry says there is one thing he is not worried about.

"The good news is that no one is really forecasting a loss of power," Henry said.
