Video posted on social media claims to show several members of the U.S. Women’s National Team turning away from the U.S. flag as a 98-year-old WWII veteran played the national anthem on Monday.
The anthem was performed just before the team played Mexico in a final tune-up before the Tokyo Olympics.
U.S. Soccer said that, in reality, most of the team was turned toward the American flag at the end of the stadium. Others faced Pete DuPre as he delivered “The Star-Spangled Banner” on a harmonica.
The U.S. beat Mexico 4-0.
