The Magnolia ISD school board has announced that masks will not be required for in-person learning effective April 1.
The district says it hopes more teachers will have been vaccinated by then.
Gov. Greg Abbott has ended all COVID-19 restrictions, including his previous mask mandate, effective Wednesday. However, nearly all other school districts in the Houston area have said they would wait for further guidance from the Texas Education Agency before moving forward.
Current TEA guidelines require all students, teachers, staff and visitors to wear masks on school property, unless school boards vote otherwise.
Magnolia's superintendent has reported that the district surveyed its 900-plus teachers in advance of the vote, and 70 percent said they would feel safe without a mask if they had time to get vaccinated.
