Coronavirus, quarantines, job losses and now, National Divorce Day, 2021

Houston family law firm braces for influx of divorce filings

Houston, TX. – National Divorce Day is the first working Monday of the New Year when Google and legal firms see a surge in inquiries from couples seeking a divorce, This year it falls on Monday, Jan 4, 2021. And this year could wildly exceed all expectations.

Head of family law at The Rainwater Firm, Charlotte Rainwater, states: “Catastrophic events have a way of magnifying the good and the bad in all of us and relationships don’t escape that rule.”

“Added to this the holiday period can be very stressful which exacerbates many of the problems already apparent in a marriage,” added Rainwater. “We’ve seen the number of inquiries double around this time of year as clients halt divorce proceedings until after Christmas and New Year so as not to spoil the fun.”

“The COVID related forced togetherness combined with a looming financial crisis already has divorce related activity at all-time highs,” according to Rainwater. “Once the additional stress of the holidays is added to the mix, the divorce rates in Texas may be headed for a perfect storm in 2021.”

“The now familiar stresses of quarantine — money worries, boredom, lack of escape from each other, conflicts over the kids, conflicts over chores, lack of exercise — are forcing many couples to reconsider how they really feel about their partners,” says Rainwater. “And then one spouse decides that they don’t want to spend another holiday season in an unhappy marriage anymore.”

Rainwater adds, “We are focused on helping our clients make the best legal decisions during some of the most challenging times in their lives. Most importantly, we will protect their best interests, ensuring that the legal steps we take today will benefit their life tomorrow and for years to come.”

“Our goal is to lessen the stress and find a solution that works for everyone.”
