It's Beginning to Look a lot Like Tax Time!

December means holiday fun along with getting your year-end taxes ready. According My Tax Guy in Houston's Doug Horde, most remote workers filings won't change, unless there was a gap in their employment. "If somebody has brought in Unemployment Benefits, and didn't have income tax taken out, they may want to look into their overall tax payment and send in an estimated payment by January 15, 2021." But there could be a change for contractors. "If they were working as a 1099 Contractor and they USED to work on-site, and then they were working remotely, they are eligible for a Home Office Deduction." But - no such deduction for W-2 staff.

"For people who are working as a W-2 employee and are having taxes deducted from their paycheck, there's really no change at all." Horde suggests you contact your U.S. Congressman if you feel remote working salaried employees should also have the home office deduction.
