Astros open 2020 season with 8-2 victory over Mariners

That's how you start a season.

The Houston Astros opened up the 2020 season last night at Minute Maid Park with an 8 to 2 win over the Seattle Mariners.

The Astros did the bulk of their damage in the fifth inning, scoring five times and erasing a 2-1 deficit. The big blow in that inning was a thre-run home from outfielder Michael Brantley. Brantley had a pair of hits on the night and three RBI. Catcher Martin Maldonado had two hits and drove in two runs.

That was more than enough for starter Justin Verlander, who picked up the win, going six innings, allowing two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts.

The series continues this afternoon with Lance McCullers Jr. getting the start. It will be his first since having Tommy John surgery two years ago.

Sports Talk 790 has you covered with On Deck starting at 2. First pitch is set for 3:10.
