Texas Now Has Some of the Most COVID-19 Restrictions in the Nation

Democrats say they want state and local leaders to impose even more restrictive laws over the coronavirus pandemic. But a new study finds Texas is already among the states with the most restrictions.

In the last two weeks, the Lone Star State has gone from having some of the fewest COVID-19 restrictions in the nation to having some of the most. A WalletHub report says Texas has dropped in their rankings to the bottom fifteen on their list. Analyst Jill Gonzalez says that's largely due to Governor Greg Abbott’s recent mask order and bar shutdowns, which she thinks was reasonable.

“Obviously a lot has changed, and obviously for good reason. We’ve seen the death rate fluctuate in Texas. It’s definitely started to increase as well. So because of that, I think this is trending in the right direction for the state,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez says WalletHub has been tracking the data on state restrictions since March. Governor Abbott has rejected calls from Democrats to give them the power at the local level to impose more restrictions.
