NOAA hurricane forecast calls for 'above normal season

We may not have been paying attention to the calendar because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but we should. Hurricane season starts a week from Monday, and NOAA is calling for a lot of activity in the Atlantic this summer.

"NOAA's outlook for the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season indicates that an above normal season is most likely, with a possibility of that season being extremely active," NOAA Acting Administrator Neil Jacobs said.

So how many storms are they predicting?

"The outlook calls for 13-19 named storms; of those 6-10 will become hurricanes, and that includes three to six major hurricanes," Jacobs stated.

This comes on the heels of the forecast from Colorado State that has called for 6 named storms compared to the average of 12. Of those, they expect eight to become hurricanes (the average is six) and four of those to be major hurricanes, which is Category 3 or stronger. The average is three. They also forecast a higher than average chance of one of those major hurricanes making landfall in the United States.
