Texas steps in as local govt's restrict First Amendment rights of churches

Maybe church is part of your plans this weekend. Even though they are open, some local governments have restricted them. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is stepping in to stop them.

Paxton has warned cities like San Antonio and Austin that they were being heavy handed about restricting houses of worship. Jonathan Saenz at Texas Values says what was happening wasn't fair.

"They tried to make people think that 25% capacity in Phase One also applies to churches. Governor Abbott has been clear about this since the beginning. Churches are essential," Saenz explained.

Saenz says the message that Paxton sent to those cities was clear. What was happening was not legal.

"They need to stop violating people's First Amendment rights in misapplying those guidelines. It was encouraging that Attorney General Paxton worked so quickly," Saenz stated.

Paxton also sent letters to Dallas, Bexar, and Travis counties because of complaints that had come in.
