The re-opening of Texas was supposed to continue with 'Phase Two' starting on May 18th. The timeline just got sped up.
Governor Greg Abbott announced that Phase Two will actually begin later this week.
"Effective May the eighth, this Friday, barbershops, hair salons, nail salons and tanning salons are able to open," Abbott said.
But, there are restrictions:
- One customer per stylist unless they are waiting for service
- Six-feet of distancing between work stations
- Appointment system encouraged
- If allowing walk-ins, distancing required for people waiting for service
- Strongly recommends customers and stylists are wearing masks
Gyms will also have to stay closed for a little while longer, but the Governor, who will meet the President at the White House with other Republican Governors later this week, says fitness centers can start their comeback on May 18th with the following rules in place"
- Gyms must operate at 25% capacity
- Showers and locker rooms must remain closed during the first phase
- All equipment must be disinfected
- Customers must wear gloves that cover their whole hands and fingers
- Must maintain 6-feet social distancing inside the gym
- If they bring a yoga mat or other equipment from home, it must be disinfected before use
Elsewhere:
- Two State Representatives didn't wait for Abbott's announcement. Steve Toth and Briscoe Cain got haircuts in The Woodlands yesterday.
- Harris County Judge Lina Hidaldo is being taken to court over her Executive Order to keep non-essential businesses closed until May 20th. Dr. Steven Hotze wants a temporary restraining order and permanent injunction.
- There have been rumors about city employees getting furloughed. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner says if it happens, it would start July 1st.
- Turner also announced a rent relief program that will use millions in federal COVID-19 relief money to help Houstonians pay rent.
- Former Astro Michael Bourn announced he's waiving two months of rent for his tennants.
- The Greater Houston area reported 7 deaths yesterday to bring the total to 278.
- The state reported 23 to bring the total in Texas to 925.
