The Houston area is starting another week under a stay at home order as the cases of COVID-19 continue to to rise.
As of this morning, the City of Houston reports 743 cases of COVID-19. Ten people have died. Harris County has 652 cases with eight people losing their lives. The Houston area has 2,435 cases with 39 deaths. Texas has 7,294 cases with a death toll from the virus at 140. There are ten other states with more cases than Texas.
You might be wondering when the stimulus money will come from Washington. Senator John Cornyn told our TV partner Channel 2 it's going to take a couple of weeks.
"We've had a little bit of a snafu on people who didn't file tax returns; people like Social Security recipients. They've now fixed that," Cornyn said. You can see the entire interview below.
Elsewhere:
- Texas DPS is operating checkpoints at the Texas-Louisiana border. Governor Abbott has ordered anyone coming to Texas from Louisiana to self quarantine.
- Are people listening to those stay at home orders? Research done by a British data collection company shows almost six in ten aren't.
- If you're going shopping for food, there are changes at area supermarkets. Walmart will now allow no more than five customers for each 1,000 square feet, and Costco warehouses will be open on a modified schedule based on location. All locations will close at 6:30 p.m, during the week
- Rice University will provide temporary housing for medical personnel that work in Texas Medical Center hospitals. The university designated two residential buildings for this.
- And HISD plans to relaunch their food distribution today.
