Houston area now has 62 COVID-19 cases, 10 in the city, third Texan dies

The number of COVID-19 cases in the Houston area is growing, as expected.

The Houston area now has 62 confirmed cases of the virus. The city of Houston itself has 10. That number double from what it was on Wednesday morning.

A third man from Texas has died from the disease. That man, a 64-year old from Plano, did have an underlying health condition.

Free testing for the virus is set to begin today starting at 10 o'clock at United Memorial Medical Center. Another site set to open is at Legacy Stadium in Katy, but Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner Steve Radack says when that location opens is up in the air.

"We are putting it together. Basically it appears there is going to be a regional concept to this," Radack told our TV Partner, Channel 2.

The Galleria, Katy Mills, Memorial City are all closed due to coronavirus, putting some people temporarily out of work.

"They said take two weeks, but it was indefinite. They told me to turn in my keys. Computers were shut off. That tells me it's indefinite," one woman said.

Other developments on Wednesday:

  • The Port of Houston closed two terminals after a worker tested positive for COVID-19.
  • Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez has suggested releasing inmates to reduce the spread of coronavirus at county prisons.
  • All Texas DMVs are closed to the public, but services will continue via mail, email or phone.
  • And alcohol delivery service is now available at restaurants after Governor Greg Abbott issued a waiver allowing restaurants to deliver adult beverages with food purchases.
  • And coffee shop in Sienna - Bean Here Coffe - is offering free disinfectant to anyone who needs it.
