A Sugar Land resident wants the city to rename a couple of streets in the New Territory neighborhood to honor local black heroes.
Paul Matthews says Ellis Creek Boulevard and Cunningham Creek Boulevard are named for 19th-century plantation owners.
He's petitioning to have them renamed after Walter Burton, Fort Bend County's first black sheriff and later a state Senator, and for Garrett Gamble, a local Marine who was killed in Afghanistan.
Local residents aren't sold on the name change, mostly because of the inconvenience involved.
