This was a day that many around baseball had been waiting for; when players on the Astros would address the sign stealing scandal from 2017 that cost then manager A.J. Hinch and General Manager Jeff Luhnow their jobs.
As players reported to spring training in Florida, the Astros sent Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve to the podium to apologize to the baseball world and ask for forgiveness.
"I am really sorry about the choices that were made by my team, the organization and by me," Bregman said. "I've learned from this, and I hope to regain the trust of baseball fans."
Altuve was remorseful as well.
"The team feels bad about what happened in 2017. We especially feel remorse for impacting our fans and the game of baseball. Our team is determined to move forward, play with intensity and bring back a championship to Houston in 2020," Altuve said.
After the players left the podium, owner Jim Crane and new manager Dusty Baker took questions. Crane said mistakes were made, and that he wished he would have known about it before it got out of hand.
"If I'd have known about it I'd have done something about it. I didn't know about it until November, just like you guys," Crane explained. "I'll make sure that I have someone that's accountable moving forward and we'll be checking constantly. We will have controls in place to make sure it doesn't happen again."
Baker says he hopes the baseball world can find it in their hearts to forgive what happened.
"I wand to ask the baseball world to forgive them for the mistakes that they made," Baker quipped.
