Dan Patrick Says Texas Republicans Will Control Senate Rules

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick says he'll change state Senate rules again if he needs to, in order to keep Democrats from having more influence over legislation.

This past week Patrick told a conservative think tank that if Democrats flip a single Senate seat in the November election, he'll change the rule that says 19 of the state's 31 senators must support a bill before it can get a floor vote.

Right now, there are 19 Republicans in the Senate, and the loss of even one seat would allow the Democrats to block legislation from moving forward.

When Patrick first took office in 2015, he lowered the threshold from 21 senators to 19.
