In what has been a wild week for Astros fans, the team apparently has some good news on one front.
According to reports, the Astros and George Springer have agreed to terms on a deal for the 2020 season.
MLB.com's Mark Feinsand Tweeted:
"Per source, George Springer and the Astros have settled on a deal for 2020 at $21 million plus an awards package. "Springer and the Astros had exchanged salary figures Of $22.5 million and $17.5 million. Springer’s settlement of $21 million was $1 million above the $20 million midpoint."
This comes three days after the Astros fired manager A.J. Hinch and General Manager Jeff Luhnow for the sign stealing scandal connected to the 2017 team. And the Astros have seemingly moved forward on trying to fill one of those two vacancies.
New reports say that former Yankees, Diamondbacks, Rangers, and Orioles manager Buck Showalter has already interviewed with the team, with former Blue Jays manager John Gibbons interviewing today.
Bench coach Joe Espada has been identified as an internal candidate who was not here in 2017, when Major League Baseball says the sign stealing plan was put into play by now former Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora, and then Astro player Carlos Beltran.
Boston parted ways with Cora on Tuesday, and the Mets are apparently debating what they should do with Beltran, who was hired to manage their club in November.
