The question we have been asking about the 2020 election in Texas might not be the one we should be asking.
It's not about whether or not Texas will actually turn blue in November. The real question is whether or not Republicans will do well in the suburbs. We saw the Republican wipeout in Harris and Fort Bend Counties in 2018. Strategist Matt Mackowiak doesn't think that will be a problem this year.
"The Democrats were more motivated than Republicans were. 2020 won;t just be a referendum on Trump. It'll be a choice between Trump and whoever the Democrats nominate," Mackowiak said.
And then there is the state of the Texas Democratic Party. Will 2020, especially in the Senate primary be establishment versus socialist?
"There is a bit of old guard and new guard. You have Chris Bell and Royce West running. You could call them old guard," Mackowiak stated.
And they are taking on Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez, who is seen by some as Texas' version of AOC
