When a NASA astronaut developed a blood clot in space, an expert here on Earth was called in to handle a potentially dangerous situation.
NASA hasn't released the identity of the astronaut, but the clot was detected in their jugular vein two months into a six-month mission on the International Space Station.
Stephan Moll, a blood clot expert at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, carefully reviewed the diagnosis and the options.
There was no precedent for this kind of treatment.
The astronaut, who has since returned to Earth, has had no further problems.
