On your mark, get set, put down that turkey leg, grab your wallet and go shopping. It’s Thanksgiving.
There was a time-honored practice of retailers to open their doors early for Black Friday, the day stores’ accounting was said to jump into the black. Kmart changed the conversation in 2009 by opening on Turkey Day, perhaps a response to the 2005 inauguration of Cyber Monday, and holiday shopping hasn’t been quite the same since.
Ana Serafin Smith with the National Retail Federation says some of the stores that have gotten into the habit of the early Thanksgiving start will open later. “They are modifying their store hours this year to make sure it’s catering to that consumer more in the evening hours after they’ve already enjoyed their Thanksgiving meal.”
