Preliminary numbers show that more than 2.5 million households dropped off food stamps between the end of President Donald Trump’s first full month in office and July 2019, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data.
Food stamp enrollment reached its peak in U.S. history under the Obama administration.
Under the Trump administration, the number of people on welfare and food stamps has reached historic lows.
The president says he does not want immigrants coming to the U.S. to be dependent on food stamps.
The Eagle Forum's Cathie Adams said it's great to have a president hold people accountable for taxpayer money.
"When people come to this country of immigrants, we welcome them, but not to our welfare roles. That is not the reason why people should be coming here," said Adams.
She said legal immigrants should not come to America looking to live off taxpayer money.
"They think that they come and we have gold paved streets. No. We have moms and dads who are working hard to make their own ends meet," said Adams.
She said legal immigrants should be responsible and pay for their own way and providing for their families should be primary.
Adams added there's something really wrong with illegal immigrants crossing into the US and immediately getting on welfare.
Adams said it's very reasonable requirements from the federal government to have legal immigrants do 20 hours a week of job training, work, attending school or even volunteering.
