Funeral Services to be Held for Murdered Deputy

Funeral services will be held this morning for fallen Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal, who was murdered last week during a traffic stop.

The public is being encouraged to line the procession route as a show of support for the deputy's family.

The funeral procession will begin at 7:30 a.m., and the route will be about 18 miles, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office:

The escort will leave the 8500 block of Breen Road at Fairbanks North Houston Road at 7:30 a.m.

It will travel north on Faribanks North Houston Road to westbound North Sam Houston Parkway West.

They will drive along the parkway till they reach U.S. Highway 290, where the procession will occupy the right two lanes of U.S. 290.

The procession will then move off the highway at the exit to Barker-Cypress Road and then turn left and travel southbound on Barker-Cypress Road for about 3.5 miles to the Berry Center of Northwest Houston.

The whole procession is expected to take about an hour. Drivers should plan their commutes accordingly.

Meanwhile, there's a Change.org campaign calling for a redesign of street signs along West Road where both Deputy Dhaliwal and Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Darren Goforth were gunned down. Organizer Andrew Callis wants the county to add a thin blue line to street signs to honor past, present and future officers.

"We've done research; we don't see any other street signs in the country that have a design like this. We've seen a couple states that will put a thin blue line on the road between the double yellow lines, but there's nothing like this that's been done yet."

Today's public ceremony for Deputy Dhaliwal will begin at 10:30 at Cy-Fair ISD's Berry Center on Barker-Cypress road. The service will start with a Sikh religious ceremony, followed by a law enforcement memorial at 11:30. It will be also streamed live on Facebook.
