Department of Homeland Security referred more than 67,000 unaccompanied children, which is the highest number in the program’s history.
Last year, there were more than 59,000, the second highest number of referrals on record.
Texans for Sensible Immigration Policy co-founder Norman E. Adams said he wants Congress to pass sensible immigration reform.
"I have no explanation for parents actually sending, I guess they're getting paid something, but sending their kids by themselves, when they should know full well they're going to be turned around," said Adams.
He said it's because of the desperation of the parents in those countries.
"A bunch of children are showing up without any adults. And, I'm certain the kids have been used as hay in front of the donkey. It's a terrible situation," said Adams.
There are reportedly less than 6,000 unaccompanied children in Health and Human Services care. During the summer, there were more than 13,000 children in their care.
They now stay in custody of HHS less time--about 50 days. Last fall, it was about 90 days.
