American Fear: Having Dementia

Most Americans over 40 fear the onset of Alzheimer's disease. June is Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month. A doctor at The Cleveland Clinic says that you can change some of your lifestyle habits today and possibly reduce the chances cognitive decline later. Dr. Marwan Sabbagh says to first look into your sleeping habits.“Sleep is what I call a cognitive killer. We know that people who are sleep deprived have worse cognitive scores than others who sleep well.Improving sleep can improve your brain function - almost in a few days.”

Dr. Sabbagh also to adopt a Mediterranean diet. That diet includes:

  • Fish, which has omega 3
  • Low saturated fat
  • Anti-occident spices
  • Olive oil which is mono-unsaturated fat
  • Whole grains
  • Legumes
  • And juuuuuuust a little bit of red wine

He says, “It’s not any one thing but a combination of things.” Dr. Sabbagh also says sleep deprivation is a cognitive killer.
